How to install a test Android app from a file
Android apps are normally installed from the Google Play Store. But developers can share apps directly as an APK file β the raw installer format Android uses. This guide walks you through installing one safely on your phone.
What you'll need
- An Android phone running Android 10 or above
- The APK file sent to you by the developer (via Google Drive, email, or similar)
The exact wording in Settings may vary slightly depending on your phone manufacturer.
Steps
Open the link you were sent and tap the APK file to download it to your phone.
Android will block the install and show a warning. Tap Settings when prompted. On the next screen, turn on Allow from this source.
This permission applies only to the app you used to open the file β usually Files or Chrome. It does not change anything else on your phone.
Go back and tap the downloaded file again. Tap Install when prompted. The app will install within a few seconds.
Tap Open when installation finishes, or find the newly installed app in your app drawer.
Troubleshooting
Go to Settings β Apps β Special app access β Install unknown apps. Find the app you used to download the file and enable it there.
Make sure you're signed into a Google account on your phone. Tap the three-dot menu on the file and choose Download rather than Open.
This is likely a problem with the build itself rather than your phone. Let the developer know your phone model and Android version β go to Settings β About phone to find both.
