How to export a Google Doc as a Word file
Google Docs can save a copy of any document as a Microsoft Word file, ending in .docx, that opens in Word on any computer. The original stays in Google Docs untouched — you get a separate file to attach to an email or hand over. This guide covers the desktop browser version.
What you'll need: A Google Account with the document in it. A desktop or laptop browser. You don't need Word installed to make the file — only to open it afterwards.
Open the document in Google Docs
Go to docs.google.com and sign in if you aren't already. Click the document you want to export. It opens in the same tab.
Open the File menu
Click File in the menu bar at the top-left of the page, below the document's name.
Point to Download
Move the mouse over Download, a little way down the menu. A second list slides out to the right showing every format Google Docs can save in.
Click Microsoft Word (.docx)
It's the first item in the list. Both menus close and the browser starts downloading the file straight away — there's no dialog to confirm.
Find the downloaded file
The file lands in your browser's usual downloads folder — Downloads unless you've changed it. It has the same name as the document, with .docx on the end.
In Chrome, click the downloads icon (a downward arrow) at the top-right of the window to see it. In Safari, click the same kind of arrow to the right of the address bar.
Open it and read it through
Double-click the file to open it in Word. Scroll through once before you send it on. Most documents come across as they were, but fonts, spacing around headings and anything laid out in a table are the parts most likely to have shifted.
Variations
In drive.google.com, right-click the document and click Download. Drive converts a Google Doc to .docx automatically on the way out, so you get the same Word file as steps 2 to 4 produce. This is the shortest route when you have several documents to export: select them all first, then right-click and download, and Drive gives you one zip file containing a .docx for each.
Click File › Email › Email this file. In the box that opens, type the recipient's address, and change the format dropdown at the bottom from PDF to Microsoft Word. Click Send. Google sends the email from your account with the .docx attached, and nothing is saved to your computer.
Open the document, tap the three-dot menu (⋮) at the top-right, then tap Share & export. Tap Send a copy, choose Word (.docx), and pick where to send it — Mail, Messages, or any other app on the share sheet. Save as in the same menu does something different: it makes a Word copy inside your Google Drive rather than on the phone.
Troubleshooting
The document's owner can stop viewers and commenters from downloading it. If you're on a shared document and the option is missing, that setting is the cause — ask the owner either to make you an Editor or to switch on Viewers and commenters can see the option to download, print, and copy in the document's sharing settings. On a work or school account, the administrator may have blocked downloads instead, and only they can lift that.
That's expected. Comments in the Google Doc become Word comments, and any suggestions still waiting to be accepted become tracked changes. If you want a clean file, resolve the comments and accept or reject every suggestion in Google Docs first, then download it again.
Google Docs offers fonts that aren't installed on most computers. When Word can't find one, it substitutes something similar, which changes line lengths and page breaks. Either change the document to a font Word already has — Arial, Calibri and Times New Roman are safe — and download again, or download as PDF Document (.pdf) instead if the reader only needs to look at it and not edit it.
